Cameraman Beaten, Robbed During Live Broadcast

A photojournalist for KPIX, the CBS affiliate in Francisco, was beaten and robbed of his camera by a group of young men in Oakland following a live newscast report Wednesday. According to the station, photographer Gregg Welk and reporter Anne Makovec had just finished their noon report when several five men rushed up, punched Gregg and grabbed his camera. The men then fled in a car with the camera. Gregg suffered minor injuries, was treated at a hospital and released. Anne was not hurt. This isn't the first time journalists have been attacked in broad daylight. In recent months, journalists from several news outlets in the area have been accosted and robbed of laptops, cameras and tripods. KPIX says reporters covering stories in Oakland would be accompanied by security guards, day or night, effective immediately.
